Description
This English fine bone china chalice features a flaring rim and a pedestal foot decorated with gilded foliate borders. The exterior body is decorated with two primary panels separated by a diapered floral ground and architectural gothic arch motifs. One side displays a detailed sepia-toned illustration of the towers and fortifications of York Minster. The opposing side features a heraldic crest centered on a red shield with two crossed keys beneath a crown, enclosed in an ornate gold scrollwork frame. The interior rim bears a printed mark in gold consisting of a circular crown emblem above the name Caverswall and the word ENGLAND. Below this, the text identifies the subject as THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF St. PETER and YORK MINSTER. The design is attributed to the artist via a printed script signature reading designed by John Ball. A handwritten number 33 is applied in black ink below the printed marks.
Condition report:
The chalice is in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. The hand-gilded accents on the rim and the pedestal base show no signs of thinning or wear (photos 1 and 2). The transfer-printed illustrations and text remain crisp and intact (photos 2 and 3).
