Description
A mid-19th-century earthenware jug featuring neoclassical transfer-printed decoration. The vessel is constructed with a bulbous body, a flared rim with a wide pouring spout, and a scrolled handle. The exterior is finished in a cream-colored glaze and decorated with a central mythological scene titled THETIS, printed at the base of the image. The scene depicts two female figures in classical dress, one standing and one seated on a klismos chair. The interior rim is highlighted with a reddish-brown band, while the exterior rim features a black transfer-printed Greek key border above a row of circular and foliate motifs. The base bears a black printed mark consisting of the word FLAXMAN inside a stylized scroll banner, with the initials W S. below it. The initials identify the manufacturer as William Smith and Co. of Stockton-on-Tees.
Condition report:
The jug exhibits fine, all-over crazing to the glaze, visible across the body and base (photos 1, 2, and 3). There is visible wear and loss to the transfer-printed border at the rim and along the spine of the handle (photo 2). Several small dark firing specks or pitting marks are present in the ceramic body, particularly near the base of the transfer scene (photo 1). No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible in the provided images.
