Description
A pair of English stoneware mugs featuring a tapered, flared form with a pedestal foot and a wide ear-shaped handle. The exterior body is decorated with a complex geometric pattern consisting of interlocking diamonds and vertical rectangles in a palette of olive green, ochre, brown, and cream, reminiscent of Art Deco stained glass designs. The interior of each mug is finished in a high-gloss terracotta red glaze, while the exterior has a matte, textured finish with a speckled green glaze applied to the handle and the base. The underside of each mug features a printed black backstamp consisting of a central stylized “S” or serpent entwined around a horizontal bar containing the name “DENBY”. The word “ENGLAND” is printed above the bar. Surrounding this central logo in a circular arrangement are the words “DISHWASHER”, “FREEZER”, “MICROWAVE”, and “OVEN SAFE”. The pattern is identified as Gatsby.
Condition report:
The mugs are in excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, or crazing (photos 1 and 2). The interior glazes remain bright and show no evidence of staining or utensil marks. The foot rims show negligible shelf wear (photo 3).
