Description
Two English earthenware mugs, each featuring transfer-printed and hand-colored illustrations celebrating Yorkshire folk humor. The larger mug is cylindrical with an angular handle and shows a rotund countryman in a smock holding a tankard of ale and a pitchfork. A speech bubble above the figure contains the phrase: HERE’S TA ME AN’ MA WIFE’S ‘USBAN’ NOT FO’GETTING MESEN. The reverse is decorated with a humorous heraldic crest titled Tykes’ Motto, featuring four quadrants containing a bird, a bee, a fish, and a side of meat. The crest is surrounded by text in Yorkshire dialect: See all, hear all, say nowt. Eat all, sup all, pay nowt. and HERE’S TIV US, ALL ON US, ME AN’ ALL, MAY WE NIVVER WANT NOWT, NONE ON US, NOR ME NAWTHER. The smaller mug features an identical illustration and text layout but is shorter in stature with a more compressed angular handle. The base of the smaller mug bears an impressed mark reading England in a curved orientation, alongside the impressed numbers 249 and a letter P. Two small green painted marks resembling birds’ feet are also present on the base. The larger mug has an unglazed foot rim and lacks manufacturer marks.
Condition report:
The larger mug displays significant and dense crazing to the glaze across the entire exterior and interior surfaces (photo 1 and 2). Dark staining and discoloration are visible, particularly around the interior base and the top rim (photo 2). The smaller mug shows minor shelf wear and light scuffing to the unglazed portion of the base (photo 3). No chips, cracks, or structural repairs are visible on either piece.
