Description
A rectangular hardwood trinket box, constructed from a dark-grained wood consistent with sheesham or rosewood. The hinged lid features a flush brass inlay at the center depicting a profile of an elephant with an upright trunk, detailed with incised lines to indicate skin texture and ears. The lid is further decorated with pinned brass edge banding that follows the slightly arched profile of the top. The box is fitted with a cast brass swing latch on the front and two internal brass butt hinges at the rear. The interior is unfinished, showing the natural wood grain and joinery. No maker’s marks, signatures, or country-of-origin labels are visible on the interior or exterior surfaces of the wood or metal components.
Condition report:
The box is in good vintage condition. The hardwood surfaces show scattered light surface abrasions and minor scratches, particularly on the lid (photo 1). The brass inlay and banding exhibit a natural aged patina with areas of tarnish and oxidation (photo 1). There are small gaps visible at the corners where the brass edge banding meets (photo 1). The brass latch and hinges are intact and appear functional, showing typical surface wear and oxidation consistent with age. The interior wood is clean with no visible staining or significant damage (photo 2).
