Description
A pair of circular English porcelain lidded trinket or relish boxes featuring multicolored transfer-printed scenes on the lids. The porcelain is finished with a clear white glaze. The first lid depicts a three-masted sailing ship with orange-toned sails navigating a green sea, surrounded by a circular border containing the text CLIPPER SHIP FLYING CLOUD OFF TUSKAR LIGHT. The second lid features a rural landscape scene with a white cottage, a figure on horseback, and livestock near water, with the text ST JAMES’S at the top and DERWENT WATER at the base of the scene. The underside of each base features a black transfer-printed mark within a beaded oval border. The mark is literally read as A. G. HACKNEY & CO. Ltd., ENGLISH, PORCELAIN, and Staffordshire. The interior of both boxes is plain white porcelain.
Condition report:
Both items are in good overall condition. A small, shallow chip is visible on the interior rim of one base (photo 3). A minor fleabite or glaze skip is present on the lower exterior rim of the second base (photo 3). The transfer-printed decorations on the lids show some light surface scuffing and minor scratches consistent with use, particularly visible on the Flying Cloud lid (photo 3), but the colors remain vibrant.
