Description

A Japanese hand-painted porcelain coffee pot of tall, tapered cylindrical form featuring an ornate gilded handle and a curved spout. The vessel is finished in a peach-toned iridescent lusterware glaze decorated with a traditional landscape scene. The foreground depicts a single crane (tsuru) standing among aquatic plants and water, while the background includes stylized pine trees, mountains, and a tiered building with an orange roof. The stepped lid and the upper rim of the body are finished in a contrasting blue luster glaze, and the lid is topped with a gilded finial. The handle and the tip of the spout also feature heavy gilding. The underside of the base features a printed black square mark containing four Japanese characters in an archaic script; below this mark is printed text reading HAND PAINTED, MEAD IN, JAPAN. The word made appears to be misspelled as MEAD in this backstamp.

Condition report:

The porcelain is in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs to the body, spout, or handle (photos 1, 2). There is visible wear to the gilding on the handle and the lid finial (photo 1). A small area of adhesive residue or surface scuff is present on the blue-glazed tip of the spout (photo 1). The hand-painted decoration and luster glazes remain bright and intact.
