Lot 12:
Description
A traditional boatswain pipe, also known as a bosun whistle, featuring a mixed-metal construction. The pipe, or gun, is composed of copper, while the buoy and the flat keel are made of brass. The buoy is decorated with an embossed device consisting of an anchor with a rope coiled around the shank, known as a fouled anchor. A small brass ring is attached to the keel, which connects to a yellow-tone metal curb-link lanyard chain via a swivel lobster-style clasp. The mouthpiece is finished with a simple raised bead. No maker names, country-of-origin marks, or hallmarks are present on the body of the whistle or the chain.
Condition report:
The item is in good condition with a light, even patina across the copper and brass surfaces. Minor surface scratches and very small areas of pitting are visible on the keel and the buoy (photo 1). The chain and swivel clasp are functional and show no significant oxidation or kinks (photo 2). The mouthpiece is free of dental crimping or significant wear (photo 2).
