Description
An antique English tin-plated steel cash box featuring a black-painted finish decorated with gold and red pinstriping and a bordered lid. The exterior lid is fitted with a central brass swing handle mounted on circular rosettes. The interior is equipped with a black-painted, tiered cantilevered tray mechanism that unfolds when the lid is opened, revealing multiple compartments with individual hinged lids and circular wire pull rings. An embossed mark on the interior metal lip of the box reads MADE IN ENGLAND. A keyed lock mechanism is centered on the front face, though the corresponding key is not present. The base and interior show a dark japanned or painted finish consistent with late 19th or early 20th-century utility metalwork.
Condition report:
The box exhibits significant surface wear consistent with age and utility. The exterior shows heavy scratching and scuffing to the paint, particularly on the lid and front panel (photo 1). There are numerous areas of paint loss resulting in visible surface oxidation and rust, most notably along the edges, corners, and the base rim (photo 1, 2). The interior cantilevered mechanism shows extensive finish loss and surface corrosion, though the linkage appears structurally intact (photo 2). The brass handle shows a dull patina and minor oxidation. The lock is present, but functionality is unverified as the key is missing. The hinges remain functional, though they exhibit surface rust (photo 2).
