Description

A rectangular wooden trinket box featuring comprehensive inlay in a geometric Moorish style. The exterior is decorated with intricate patterns of eight-pointed stars and tessellated borders utilizing various natural and dyed wood veneers alongside bone or mother-of-pearl. The lid is designed with a raised central rectangular panel and beveled edges, opening on two brass hinges to reveal a red felt-lined interior. The interior contains a removable three-compartment wooden tray, also lined in red felt, which rests on two wooden supports. The front of the box features a white circular escutcheon surrounding a keyhole; no key is present. The base is finished with a tiered parquetry border. A small metal plate is visible on the interior rim near the latch. A white rectangular adhesive label bearing the number 1 is attached to the front face; this appears to be a temporary inventory sticker and is not a permanent mark or label. No maker’s marks, signatures, or country-of-origin stamps are visible on the object.

Condition report:

The box shows age-related wear throughout. There is a visible loss of inlay on the interior upper right frame of the lid (photo 3). Minor scuffs and small chips to the wood finish are present along the exterior edges and base (photo 1 and 2). The interior red felt lining exhibits light fraying and minor dark staining consistent with use (photo 3 and 4). The brass hinges and latch show surface oxidation and some verdigris (photo 3). The parquetry remains largely intact across the primary exterior surfaces.
