Description
A mid-century glazed ceramic still bank depicting a stylized owl. The owl is portrayed wearing a black mortarboard graduation cap with a molded red tassel. It wears large, black-rimmed spectacles with blue and white painted eyes. The owl’s wings and head feature brown and tan feathered detailing against a light cream body. The owl is depicted holding a yellow and white book under its right wing. The front of the book features a black border and is inscribed with the text WISE OWL BANK in hand-painted black lettering. The coin slot is located on the flat top of the mortarboard hat. The base has a circular opening for coin retrieval. A white adhesive label with the numeral 9 is present on the top of the hat.
Condition report:
The bank exhibits significant wear to the cold-painted elements. There is widespread paint loss and thinning on the red tassel, the black spectacles, and the brown feathered accents on the wings and head (photo 1). The yellow and black lettering on the book shows minor surface scuffs. The ceramic body appears intact without visible chips or cracks. The original rubber or plastic stopper is missing from the circular opening at the base.
