Description

A mid-20th-century Hong Kong glazed porcelain ginger jar of ovoid form featuring a textured white glaze ground with raised molded bosses. The body is decorated with a hand-painted enameled scene depicting a female figure in traditional dress seated in a garden landscape beside a fence. Polychrome ruyi-head and floral borders in pink, yellow, and blue enamels encircle the shoulder and base. The vessel includes a fitted lid with a pierced cash-coin motif highlighted in orange enamel. A damaged paper label is adhered to the side, consisting of a blue circular border with a central illustration of a bird over ginger roots and a red text block. The readable text on the label includes G CHUN CANNING CO. at the top, STEM GINGER IN SYRUP in the center, and a red rectangular section reading NET WEIGHT 8 OZ, INGREDIENT:, GINGER 50%, and SYRUP 50%. The bottom curve of the label reads MADE IN HONG KONG along with the Chinese characters 子羌蜜.

Condition report:

The porcelain body exhibits a significant horizontal crack or professional repair line encircling the middle circumference and passing through the paper label (photo 1). The paper label shows heavy wear, including several large tears and losses to the printed surface (photo 1). There is visible surface grime and dark residue around the perforations of the lid (photo 3). The enameled decoration remains generally intact with some minor surface abrasions.
